Logan Court System & Jurisdictions

The Court of Common Pleas operates in Logan County as the main court of general jurisdiction. It is divided into several divisions, each handling specific categories of cases.

General Division — handles civil lawsuits, felony criminal cases, and appeals from lower courts. This is where cases related to contract disputes, damage claims, and serious criminal charges are conducted. The Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure apply to all civil proceedings in this court.

Family Court combines three divisions:

  • Domestic Relations Division — divorce, dissolution of marriage, legal separation, annulment of marriage, protective orders (CPO), allocation of parental rights, and modifications of previously issued decisions
  • Juvenile Division — cases involving minors: delinquency, dependency, neglect, status offenses, and custody matters
  • Probate Division — wills, estate administration, adult guardianship, name changes, and involuntary hospitalization

For small claims, traffic violations, and misdemeanors within the county, the Bellefontaine Municipal Court operates. This court serves the area including the city of Bellefontaine and surrounding regions.

Appeals from any of these courts are directed to the Third District Court of Appeals, and further to the Supreme Court of Ohio. If you have a dispute with a state government agency regarding access to public records, such cases are handled by the Ohio Court of Claims.
